Harnessing AI to Combat Cyberbullying in Tennis: A New Era of Digital Safety
Since its inception in January 2023, Threat Matrix has been instrumental in identifying and mitigating cyberbullying within the tennis community. By examining nearly 2.5 million posts across platforms like X, Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, and TikTok, the initiative has flagged and verified 12,000 abusive comments aimed at players and officials. This effort led to the reporting of 15 highly abusive individuals to authorities, showcasing the effectiveness of AI in digital surveillance and community protection.
The initiative operates in 39 languages, demonstrating its global reach and commitment to inclusivity. It has identified specific trends in abuse, with “angry gamblers” accounting for 48% of the negative interactions, highlighting a significant intersection between sports betting and online harassment. The volume of abuse notably spikes during major events such as Grand Slams, emphasizing the need for continuous monitoring.
Threat Matrix not only analyzes public posts but also extends its protective measures to private direct messaging, ensuring comprehensive coverage. This holistic approach is crucial as it addresses the full spectrum of potential abuse, safeguarding the mental health and well-being of athletes.
The initiative’s success lies in its collaborative nature, involving players, law enforcers, betting operators, governing bodies, and social media platforms. Stuart Miller, senior executive director for integrity & legal at the ITF, underscores the collective effort required to effect meaningful change.
