In a groundbreaking advancement, artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping the way wildfires are detected and managed. For the first time, the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) was alerted to a vegetation fire in a remote California canyon without a single 911 call. Thanks to the University of California San Diego’s ALERTCalifornia camera network, AI detected an “anomaly” at 2 a.m., marking a significant step in wildfire management.
The AI network, strategically placed in wildfire-prone regions, identified a fire in Black Star Canyon, east of Irvine Lake. This innovative use of AI technology enabled fire crews to swiftly contain the blaze to less than a quarter acre, preventing potential devastation and ensuring no injuries or property damage occurred.
OCFA Fire Chief Brian Fennessy praised the technology, emphasizing the importance of early detection and collaboration in combating wildfires, especially as they become a year-round threat.
